Rome doesn't ease you in. We turned a corner near our apartment on the first night and there was the Pantheon, just sitting there, two thousand years old and completely unbothered by the crowd of tourists taking photos of its front door.
We ate more pasta than is probably advisable, threw coins we couldn't spare into the Trevi Fountain, and climbed to the top of the Palatine Hill to watch the Forum turn gold in the late afternoon. Every street seemed to have something worth stopping for.
