We rang in the new year on a beach in North Goa with a bonfire, a lot of dancing, and a fireworks show from a hotel down the shore that nobody had actually organized for us but that we happily claimed anyway. Days were slow: beach, book, repeat, with the occasional scooter ride out to a quieter stretch of sand further south.
Old Goa's Portuguese-era churches, all whitewashed stone and gold leaf, were a strange and lovely contrast to the beach shacks a short drive away.
