Udaipur earns its nickname completely: the City Palace and its lake-facing havelis reflect straight off Lake Pichola in a way that makes the whole city look slightly unreal at sunset. We took a boat out to Jagmandir island one evening and watched the palace lights come on one by one from the water.
Getting lost in the old city's narrow lanes turned up tiny rooftop cafes with better lake views than half the five-star hotels, and a silver-jewelry shop we ended up visiting twice.
